Jaisalmer is about as far west of India. It’s incredibly dry, hot, and isolated. So what is it that brings people to a city a stone’s throw away from the Pakistan border?

The ‘ Golden City’ as it has come to be known as a majestic place.

Situated right in the heart of Thar desert, it gets the name Golden City due to its bounteous sand dunes, sandstone buildings, camel rides, and royal Havelis.

Jaisalmer is nothing short of a scene straight out of Arabian Nights.

1. Jaisalmer Fort

  • It is nestled and famous for the golden sands of the Thar Desert, which is not just a fort but a mini-town with houses and dhabas serving delicious daal baati.
  • The yellow sand dunes surrounding the fort, create a perfect ambiance for a camel safari or a jeep safari. The cascading sand of the desert makes sand surfing very exciting. You could find some shops for your souvenir shopping too.

4. Tanot Temple

  • There are places that hold so much of elegance but are rarely visited because of the locations they are put up in. Tanot temple is one such hidden gem.
  • Located in close proximity to the international border with Pakistan and around 120 km. from Jaisalmer, the Tanot Mataji Temple is also a must-visit place in the Jaisalmer circuit.
  • Fun Fact: The Tanot temple is known for a miraculous coincidence that took place during the 1971 Indo-Pak war. Despite the shelling of 3000 bombs from the Pakistan border, not one exploded in the vicinity of the temple. The unexploded bombs are to date treasured there.

  • Club your visit to the temple with the Longewala War Museum and you can save yourself a lot of time. The roads lead to both Longewala and Tanot temple is very isolated.
  • Ramgarh is the last recognized town on this route where you can find some semblance of decent eating options. Considering the long drive, keep yourself stocked with water and some light food for the journey.

5. Longewala Border

  • You must witness the battleground where the Indian army not only valiantly protected its post but also managed to inflict heavy losses on the Pakistani army. By the end of the war, the Pakistanis had lost nearly 200 soldiers, loss of 30+ tanks and 500 additional vehicles.
  • One could see endless sand dunes with hardly any vegetation. Once you get closer to the border area (civilians cannot go beyond the Longewala check post) you can see a couple of tanks, and other war vehicles that were used in the war.
